In many Bangladeshi homes, children grow up hearing Bangla with family and English at school, on television and online. Some parents worry that learning two languages at the same time might confuse their child. The good news is that young children are remarkably good at picking up more than one language — especially when they start early and learning feels like play, not homework.
Being comfortable in both Bangla and English gives children a wonderful head start. It helps them connect with their culture and family while also preparing them for school and the wider world. Best of all, you don’t need expensive classes to get started. Here are seven simple activities you can enjoy together at home.
1. Label Your Home in Both Languages
Write simple labels on paper — দরজা / Door, জানালা / Window, টেবিল / Table — and stick them around the house. Every time your child walks past, read the words together. Before long, they will start pointing and naming things on their own.
2. Make Story Time Bilingual
Read a Bangla story one night and an English story the next. With picture books, you can even describe the same page in both languages. Ask simple questions like “What is the cat doing?” and “বিড়ালটা কী করছে?” to keep your child involved and talking.
3. Sing Rhymes and Songs
Children remember words much faster when they are set to music. Mix traditional Bangla rhymes with popular English nursery songs, and add actions and hand movements. Singing together in the car, at bath time or before bed turns everyday routines into easy learning moments.
4. Play the “What’s This Called?” Game
Point to everyday objects — a spoon, a mango, a ball — and ask your child to name them in both languages. Take turns being the one who asks. Give a big smile or a high-five for every right answer, and gently share the word when they don’t know it yet.
5. Use Talking Books and Audio Learning Toys
Interactive talking books are a fun way for children to hear the correct pronunciation of words in both languages. Children can press, listen and repeat at their own pace — again and again. These toys are especially helpful when parents are busy, as they let children keep learning independently while still having fun.
6. Learn Both Alphabets With Puzzles
Alphabet puzzle boards make learning letters hands-on. Your child can find, trace and fit each letter into place — অ, আ, ই one day and A, B, C the next. Touching and moving the pieces helps children remember letter shapes, and it builds fine motor skills they will later need for writing.
7. Count and Cook Together
The kitchen is full of learning opportunities. Count potatoes, spoons or eggs out loud together — এক, দুই, তিন and one, two, three. Name colours, shapes and tastes as you go. Children love helping, and they learn best when words are connected to real things they can see and touch.
Tips for Bilingual Success
- Keep it short and fun. Ten to fifteen minutes of playful learning is better than an hour of forced lessons.
- Be consistent. Some families have one parent speak mostly Bangla and the other mostly English. Others set certain times of day for each language. Choose what works for your family.
- Praise effort, not perfection. Celebrate every attempt, even if the pronunciation isn’t quite right yet.
- Don’t worry about mixing. It’s completely normal for bilingual children to mix words from both languages at first. This usually fades as their vocabulary grows.
