10 Screen-Free Activities to Keep Kids Happily Busy at Home

Phones, tablets and TV can feel like a lifesaver on a busy day. But many parents notice that too much screen time leaves children restless, irritable and less interested in other activities. The World Health Organization recommends no sedentary screen time for children under two, and no more than one hour a day for children aged two to four — with less being even better.

The good news is that keeping children busy without screens doesn’t require expensive gadgets or lots of space. Here are ten simple activities that work well in any Bangladeshi home — whether you live in a small city flat or a house with a garden.

1. Puzzle Time

Jigsaw puzzles are one of the best screen-free activities for children. They build patience, concentration and problem-solving skills. Start with large-piece puzzles for younger children and move on to more pieces as they grow. Finishing a puzzle also gives children a proud sense of achievement.

2. Build a Reading Corner

Turn a quiet corner into a cosy reading nook with a few cushions, a light blanket and a small basket of books. Let your child choose what to read. Even children who can’t read yet love flipping through picture books and telling their own version of the story.

3. Drawing and Colouring

Give your child paper, crayons and colour pencils, and let their imagination run free. Ask them to draw their family, their favourite animal or what they did today. Drawing strengthens hand muscles needed for writing and gives children a way to express their feelings.

4. Target and Dart Games

Soft dart boards with velcro balls are safe, exciting and great for rainy days. Children practise aiming, counting their scores and taking turns. It’s also a fun way for the whole family to play together after dinner.

5. Treasure Hunt

Hide a few small toys or snacks around the house and give simple clues: “Look under something soft” or “Find something near the window.” For older children, write the clues on paper to encourage reading. Treasure hunts keep children moving and thinking at the same time.

6. Little Kitchen Helper

Children love to feel useful. Let them wash vegetables, sort lentils, mix batter or set the table. Kitchen tasks teach counting, measuring and following instructions — and children are far more likely to eat food they helped prepare. Always supervise them closely around heat and sharp tools.

7. Story Making and Talking Books

Start a story with one sentence and let your child add the next line. The stories often become wonderfully silly! Interactive talking books are another great option: children can press, listen and learn new words in Bangla and English at their own pace.

8. Clay and Playdough Modelling

Squeezing, rolling and shaping playdough is calming and creative. Children can make fruits, animals or letters of the alphabet. You can even make simple homemade dough with flour, salt, water and a little oil.

9. Dance and Music Time

Put on some music and have a family dance party. Play musical statues, where everyone freezes when the music stops. Singing and dancing burn energy, improve coordination and are guaranteed to bring laughter — perfect for hot afternoons when it’s too sunny to play outside.

10. Balcony Gardening

Even a small balcony can become a learning garden. Plant a few seeds — coriander, chillies or marigolds grow well in pots. Give your child the job of watering them each day. Watching a seed sprout teaches patience, responsibility and a love for nature.

Making Screen-Free Time Work

  • Create a play box filled with puzzles, books, crayons and toys that your child can reach on their own.
  • Set a routine with clear times for screens and play, so children know what to expect.
  • Join in when you can. Even ten minutes of your full attention means more than an hour of new toys.
  • Lead by example. Children copy what they see, so try to put your own phone away during family time.
